Roman politicos began realizing that art could service them in the same capacity it had serviced Hellenistic elites: as a measure of self-promotion. ![]() ![]() Actors, for instance, were often considered little better than prostitutes, a sign of decadence of effeminate Greek culture.Ĭonquest of the Hellenistic realms changed attitudes slowly and to a degree. All I wanted was to read books about the side characters instead. By the end of this book every time I saw her name it took another year off my life. At times her reactions seemed reasonable (e.g., hat trick) and other times it seemed outlandish and over the top. She has no filter, but it’s always sexual, at the worst time, and never consistent. She call’s Alex’s penis “Super MC” and wants to dress it up (there literally is a scene of her putting a cape on his dick?! I just…why did that make it past editing?!). ![]() She’s 22 and refers to her vagina as a “beaver” unironically. My Review: I have never in my entire life met a character as fucking insufferable as Violet fucking Hall. What Violet thought was a one night lapse in judgement turns into Alex calling and texting and sending gifts and overall seeming sweet, unlike what the media portrays him as: a total player. Inspector Steine has been taking credit for this incident and reduction in crime for years and has his head firmly in the sand about the possibility for crime in his town. The setting for the novel is an imagined Brighton in the 1950s where organised crime seems to have been eradicated by the major gangs wiping each other out in a showdown. A Shot in the Dark is a lovely blend of ludicrous and well plotted mystery. Humour in crime fiction is not easy to pull off but Lynne has done it fabulously in my opinion. The origin of the characters is in fact a Radio 4 show written by Lynne and she has now developed them into what she promises will be a series of Constable Twitten mysteries. I love to read something quirky and a bit different and that's exactly what I discovered with this novel. My Chronicle Book Box Review: Louise's thoughts. ![]() |
